Science support materials

The ARCT (Assessment Research for Classroom Teachers) project promotes classroom-based research as an integral part of developing ARB resources.

ARB resources are based on our own, national, and international research. We present research information in formats relevant to a variety of audiences.  We provide evidence-based information to support teachers' assessment practices.

Seaweek 2013 March 2 - 10

This year's theme is Toiora te moana, toiora te tangata - healthy seas, healthy people. It promotes thinking about the relationship of people (ngā tangata) to the sea (te moana).

This selection of ARB resources may be useful for incorporating some science into your Seaweek activities. The tasks can be completed either individually or in groups, and make good starting points for discussions about what makes a healthy ocean and how we can manage that.

  1. Cleaning up the beach (LW2070) is a Level 3 matching activity that explores the impact of various sorts of rubbish on the plants and animals that live on a beach. It then asks students to prioritise which rubbish to take away first, justifying their decisions.
  2. Rocky shore food web (LW2015) and Who eats whom at the rocky shore? (LW2046) are Level 4 resources that explore feeding relationships in a rocky shore ecosystem, as shown in a food web.
  3. Living in the ocean (LW2061) is a Level 4 task that asks students to complete a drawing of things found in or near an ocean, and describe relationships between them. The focus is on interdependence in an ocean environment.
  4. Pāua (LW2012) is a Level 4/5 resource that explores laws protecting pāua and the reasons for these laws.
  5. Feeding relations in the Southern Ocean (LW2054) is a Level 5 resource that explores feeding relationships in the Southern Ocean as shown in a food web.

On the 6th August 2012 Mount Tongariro erupted sending an ash cloud of approximately 10,000 cubic metres that was identified in Napier and Wellington.

The ARBs have several assessment resources that look at warning signs, volcanic eruption process, parts of a volcano, activity and dangers of an eruption, and the spread of ash.
