Equipment
Four photocopies of each tile sheet; a recording sheet; scissors.
Teacher information
•   This task assesses students' ability to recognise the type of transformation used in tessellating different geometric shapes.
•   This assessment activity can be carried out with one student at a time or by observing a pair of students working together.
•   This task is suitable for peer assessment.
•   NOTE: No marks are give for a).

Practical Task

To make a tessellation you have to use one or more types of transformation. Cut out the tile shapes from your sheets so that you have 8 tiles of each shape.

Use 8 tiles to decide what transformations (reflection, translation, rotation) you would use with each shape to make a tessellating pattern. You may use more than one transformation to complete the pattern.

a) Circle the correct word or words for the transformations needed to make a tessellation for each shape.

  i)

   reflection   /   translation   /   rotation

  ii)

   reflection    /    translation    /    rotation

  iii)

   reflection    /    translation    /    rotation

  iv)

   reflection    /    translation    /    rotation

  v)

   reflection    /    translation    /    rotation

b) Use 8 tiles for each shape to show your partner or your teacher the transformation/s you would use to tessellate each shape.
