Copying resources

Most ARB resources also have an MS Word version to enable you to copy the resource and adapt it to the needs of your class.

Please Note: If you change a resource, the information and difficulty levels in the Teacher information page may no longer be appropriate for the modified resource.

Opening resources in a word processor

ARB resources available in MS Word format have a header similar to the diagram below:

To open the Word copy:

  1. Click on the MS Word button at the top of the resource.
  2. Save it by selecting File, Save as.
  3. Choose somewhere on your hard drive to save, and press Save.

Alternatively, you can download the ARB resources (MS Word format) by:

  1. Right clicking on the MS Word button with your mouse.
  2. Select Save target as.
  3. Choose somewhere on your hard drive to save and press Save.

Copying older resources to a word processor

Copying whole resources from Internet Explorer 5.5 & 6.0 or Firefox 1/Mozilla to MS Word 2000 or Open Office 1+

Older resources do not have a MS Word version and are only available in HTML format. You can, however, cut and paste an HTML ARB resource to your word processing package if you have MS Word 2000+ or Open Office 1+.
When you have found a resource you wish to copy:

  1. Select the contents of the resource using the Edit menu of the Browser (Edit, Select all).
  2. Copy the contents (Edit, Copy).
  3. Go to MS Word 2000 or Open Office and use the Paste function (Edit, Paste).

Copying graphics and text from Internet Explorer 5.5 to MS Word 97/98

When you have the resource you want:

  1. Go to File, Save as, and Save as type: 'web page, complete (*.htm, *.html)'.
  2. Choose somewhere on your hard drive to save and press Save.
  3. Open MS Word and select File, Open.
  4. In MS Word, open the saved HTML document. The document will be called by its resource number and will have the extension .htm, e.g., PE5008.htm.

The document will open with all text and pictures intact.

Copying graphics and text separately using Internet Explorer 5.0

If you are using Explorer 5.0, you can cut and paste graphics and text separately from the Internet to your word processor.

Copying a graphic/images

  1. Click on the right-hand mouse button when the pointer is located over the graphic/image.
  2. Select the Copy option from the pop-up menu.
  3. Switch to your word processing package (Alt-Tab if you have Windows and MS Word open).
  4. Paste (Edit, Paste) to insert the graphic/image.

Copying text

To copy the text of an ARB resource:

  1. Click at the start of the text you require, hold the mouse button down and drag to highlight the text to copy.
  2. Select the copy option (edit, copy).
  3. Switch to your word processing package (Alt-Tab if you have Windows and MS Word open);
  4. Paste (edit, paste) to insert the text.

Please Note: Some reformatting and sizing changes may be necessary.

If your browser does not have this function you will need to save the graphics to a compatible file format first before inserting them into your word processing document.

Copying graphics using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, or Netscape 7 and a word processor such as MS Word, Open Office, or Word Perfect

To copy graphics from the ARB website to your word processing package you need to have a word processor that can read or convert GIF files. (ARB pictures and graphs are images saved in GIF/JPEG format). As with all packages, graphics may take additional time to copy. Word processing software such as WordPerfect (WP7+) or Microsoft Word (MS Word 97+) Open Office (OOo1+) will convert or read GIF's.

(i) In your Internet browser
If you are using a PC, click the right-hand mouse button while located over the image you wish to copy (If using a MAC, hold the mouse button down.)
A pop-up menu gives you a choice of saving the image to another directory.
Save the image in the directory you are using for word processing, using the extension GIF, e.g., pic005.gif.

(ii) In your word processing package
If you are using Word Perfect, Open Office, or MS Word you can insert the file and it will convert the GIF automatically. (To ensure that the image is the correct size in WP7, click the right-hand mouse button and select size then maintain proportion. In MS Word 97 check that the graphic sizing is set at 100%.)
